The goal of basic biomedical research is the generation of new knowledge regarding the function of cells and organismal systems. The Stowers Institute for Medical Research, Kansas City, is such an organization. There, multiple labs investigate myriad cell functions by the study of model organisms, such as mice, zebrafish and fruit flies. Discoveries are subsequently published via peer reviewed scientific journals and presentations, most often supplemented with scientific images and illustrations. Research results are then frequently utilized by so called translational medicine organizations, in the development of novel medicines, disease therapeutics and diagnostics for the enhancement of human health.
