MarkMillerCreations LLC. Expanding beyond Medical Illustration!
Follow your bliss, said Joseph Campbell, thus, after almost four decades devoted to medical and scientific illustration for others, I am slowly transitioning into the world of art prints, sculpture and 3D physical objects, including fine woodworking. I will never retire from illustration, but am finding more time to explore other satisfying creative projects. MarkMillerCreations LLC is a work in progress, yet will evolve into a fully realized business devoted to these pursuits.
Art Prints, Greeting Cards, Sculpture and Woodworking may seem like unrelated artistic expressions, but for me the common thread is NATURE, for which I have a deep love and appreciation.
Fine Art Prints and Greeting Cards
Having studied anatomy and biology, I find it fascinating how structures and patterns are often repeated throughout the natural world. For example, the branching pattern of trees, the veins of butterfly wings, flowers and leaves, the bronchioles in our lungs and the arteries and veins in our bodies are virtually the same in pattern and proportion. Beauty is in all organisms, large and small. It’s my goal to focus on the elegance and beauty in nature by creating highly detailed, richly colored digital paintings of insects, particularly butterflies and moths, as well as flowers and reef fish.
How I Work
Starting with a pencil sketch of an actual specimen scanned into my Mac (when obtainable), I use a digitizing tablet to simulate an airbrush, and with the sketch as a template and the specimen as a direct visual reference, I paint the image on a blank virtual canvas. There is no photography involved directly in the rendering. The same mental processes that are used in traditional media are utilized in the creation of digital art. Instead of spraying paint, I “spray” pixels. Reproductions of traditional media art are created by scanning or photographing the original, thus converting the natural media into pixels. As a digital artist, I skip the middle man (the scanning process) and go right to pixels. Each rendering takes 100-200 hours to create, as the attention to detail is both tedious and exacting.
