Educating laypeople patients about their medical condition is challenging for caretakers, especially considering that the general public often lacks an understanding of anatomy, physiology, disease mechanisms or treatment protocols. Thus medical illustration is often used to bridge the communication gap between healthcare professionals and patients. Illustrations in this category require a greater degree of simplicity than educational illustrations for medical professionals, and should be accurate, yet, as much as possible, be non-offensive or overtly frightening.
